Recovering from surgery...

What a busy two weeks we've had! My surgery went well and I am beginning to feel much more like my old self again - just in time for the warm Spring weather! Many, many thanks to Gram, Aunt Jo-Ann, and Grandma Chrisanne for spending so much time with us helping to take care of Sophia and Ethan. We couldn't have done it without you!!!

The latest and greatest developments with the babies... Sophia has started grabbing onto toys. Sometimes she hangs onto a toy and cries until we help her to remember that she can let go... Ethan is reaching and stretching to grab onto things and continues to practice rolling. They are both so much more alert, are "talking" a lot more, and are interested in playing games like patty-cake. We can't believe how big they are!

Ethan is only slightly smaller than Sophia - he's 23.5" long (5th percentile), 12 pounds 9 ounces (10th percentile), and her head circumference is 40.5 cm (10th percentile). It surprising that such small differences make such a big difference in the percentiles - boys in general tend to be bigger than girls, so even when Sophia and Ethan are exactly the same measurement his percentile is lower...

We had a scare with Sophia this week. We had a pediatrician visit and learned that Sophia is 24" long (45th percentile), 13 pounds 3 ounces (50th percentile), and her head circumference is 43.5 cm (95th percentile). Developmentally, she is right on track with full term babies, but her head is so big and out of proportion with the rest of her that our pediatrician scheduled a head ultrasound for us to rule out megacranium due to hydrocephalus. He told us not to google hydrocephalus, but of course we did... It's caused by an accumulation of fluid in the brain, is more common in preemies, and can cause brain damage. The treatment is a series of surgeries to relieve the pressure by implanting a shunt that runs under the skin from the brain to the abdomen. Yikes! Needless to say we were terrified for 48 hours while we waited for the test.

Sophia was tested yesterday morning and while she does have a big head, she DOES NOT have hydrocephalus. We are so thankful that she is okay. Yet another reminder how precious our children are to us and how grateful we are that Sophia and Ethan continue to be healthy... Our pediatrician will continue to monitor her head growth. Eventually her proportions should even out. What a relief!!!

Surgery went well :: going home today

My hernia repair surgery on Friday went well. I was surprised to be in the hospital until today (Monday), but apparently it's relatively common. I had a low-grade fever and needed to work with the doctors to control my pain, so I ended up staying an extra night just to be sure.

While I can't say that I've enjoyed this process (I miss my Sophia and Ethan!!!), I am sleeping more than I have since the babies were born which does feel good. I need to continue to rest during the next two weeks and should be healed enough to lift the babies by the end of that time period. In the meantime I can hold Sophia and Ethan as long as I don't lift them.

Thank goodness for my mom, my aunt, and Steve's mom! They are all a huge help and we feel so lucky to have them with us during this time!

Playtime

I'm about a week behind in uploding pictures and videos - these are from last week... Sophia and Ethan have started cooing and laughing a little which are nice additions to their smiles!

My surgery is scheduled for this coming Friday. My mom, Aunt Jo-Ann, and mother-in-law Chrisanne have all offered to help us while I'm recovering. Steve is taking time off and also working from home. Hopefully I'll be back on my feet after a week and back to normal after 2 weeks!

Sophia studies the "krinkle bird"

"That bird has a lot of colors!"
"KRINKLE BIRD - YOU ARE SO COLORFUL!!!"

Ethan...

Ethan and Sophia play on their activity mats. We've only just realized that Ethan's "oh this is so cool" voice and his "pick me up now" voice are very similar. In this case he's excited...

I sing to Sophia and Ethan a lot during the day and at mealtimes. One of our favorite songs is "Barges" - one that I learned years ago when I was a camp counselor.

Grumpy old man? Nope. It's a grumpy new mom...

Lately I've been noticing a lime-size bulge in the right side of my stomach directly above my c-section scar. It kinda hurt in an annoying but not ibuprofen-worthy way... After some delay in hopes that it would just go away (it didn't...), I finally went to my PCP. When I told him that I thought I had a hernia he said that he usually doesn't see those in women my age - it's mostly an old man thing. After examining me for about 2 minutes he agreed that I do indeed have an incisional hernia. I learned that during my emergency c-section some of the layers of muscle did not reconnect properly. So I need to have another surgery to correct it.

After consulting a surgeon today I learned that the surgery is a one-hour procedure. I'll need to stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 days afterward. During my 1 to 2 week recovery I won't be able to lift our 12 pound twins. After I recover I'll be able to lift them one at a time and go on light walks. After 6 weeks I will most likely be back to normal. I haven't scheduled the surgery yet, but at this point we're hoping that either next week or the last week in March will work.

Crap, crap, crap. Hopefully this is the last of the health issues and medical crises for awhile...
